How do I apply?
Visit www.apply.lineman.edu or click on the “Apply” link above to start the simple 5-step application process. Please do not hesitate to call us at 888-LINEWORK, opt 1 (Admissions) if you have any questions or if you are unable to complete the online admissions process for any reason whatsoever – or if you’d just like to talk to a human! Step 1. Apply to NLC. During Step 1, you will complete the personal information form and pay a non-refundable application fee of $100. Then, you will be assigned an Admissions Consultant (AC), who will support you throughout the admissions process. Your AC will email you a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) form which is used to authorize third party access to your academic and/or financial information. By federal law, only you and NLC staff members are allowed access to this information, unless you give us permission to discuss it with others. If you want family members, future employers, banks, loan, scholarship or credit agencies to have access to your academic or financial records, you may authorize it by completing and electronically signing this form. Step 2. Complete your enrollment. After you complete the application step, you will be emailed an Applicant ID number, which is needed to access Step 2, the enrollment process. During Step 2, you will upload documents to show that you meet NLC’s minimum admissions requirements, and you will pay a lab fee, which is used to offset the cost of your training materials while you are a student at NLC. After all the documents are uploaded to our system and the lab fee is paid, your AC will email you an Enrollment Agreement. Once you electronically sign the enrollment agreement, you will receive a Student ID number, which you will use to access Step 3. Step 3. Sign up for any or all of NLC’s optional course offerings. You may pay for the optional courses at this time, or you may defer optional course payment until a later date. If you decide to defer optional course payment, your seat in the optional course will not be reserved until payment is made. Once you select your desired optional courses, your AC will provide you with an Optional Course Registration Form, which you will complete and sign electronically. Once we receive your form and payment, you will be officially registered for the optional courses of your choice. Step 4. Learn about the commercial driver’s license/learner’s permit requirements, student housing options available to you through our partner, Collegiate Housing Services, and different funding options that may be available to you. Step 5. Get connected to us and your classmates by liking us on Facebook and joining our student community. We look forward to receiving your application and helping you through this process. How long will I have to wait before I know if I got in?
At what point in the admissions process is my seat reserved?
Following Step 2 (Enrollment) of the 5-Step Admissions process, which includes completing the enrollment agreement and paying the lab fee, your seat will be reserved. NLC uses an open enrollment process, which means that completed enrollment agreements are accepted in the order they are received. Your best chance to get a seat in the term of your choice is to get your application in early and immediately start the enrollment process. Please remember to pay your tuition at least four weeks prior to the term start date in order to keep your reserved seat.
What is the purpose of the lab fee?
What type of job placement do you offer when I graduate?
NLC does not guarantee or place you in a job after graduation, but NLC supports your employment efforts in several ways:
- A core component of our curriculum is our unique Career Planning and Strategies (CP&S) course, which prepares you to find and succeed in the Power Delivery industry.
- During CP&S, you will learn about the industry, how to write an effective cover letter and resume, how to interview, and how to present yourself to prospective employers.
- ELP students and alumni have exclusive access to NLC’s Alumni Job Portal where Utilities, Municipalities, Electric Cooperatives, Instructor Owned Utilities, and Contractors from across the nation post job openings.
- The Registrar’s Office supports ELP students and alumni by providing transcripts, replacement certificates, and support for access to the Alumni Job Portal.
Will I have to relocate to find employment?
As in any profession, electrical lineworkers who are geographically flexible are much more successful finding employment than those who are not. For this reason, we encourage you to keep your options open when considering where you will work. It can be challenging to start a career if you limit yourself to a specific town or area. Instead, we encourage you to consider the entire state, multi-state region, or (even better) the entire country. We have found that graduates who are willing to work anywhere typically receive multiple job opportunities. And who knows? Maybe that dream job in your home town will open up for you while you’re building your career skills and résumé elsewhere.
