To be eligible to attend NLC, you must

• Be at least 18 years of age by the start date of the term you select.
• Have a high school diploma or GED.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Be eligible to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL).
• Be physically and mentally fit to participate (official Medical Release form provided during enrollment process).
• Provide proof of current medical insurance coverage by the start date of the term you select. (Students are required to keep current coverage for the duration of the program.)
• Not have a felony conviction on your record.
• Weigh no more than 270 pounds due to weight restrictions of fall protection equipment.
• Complete the online learning readiness assessment (Hybrid program only).

You can be denied admission if you do not meet the minimum admission requirements.  NLC uses an open enrollment process, which means that completed enrollment agreements are accepted in the order they are received.  Your best chance to get a seat in the term of your choice is to submit your application early and immediately start the enrollment process.

In order to enter the Electrical Lineworker Program, you must be eligible to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the Idaho campus, or a Class A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) at the California, Texas and Florida campuses.  In order to graduate from the Electrical Lineworker Program, you will need to obtain a CDL or CLP, depending on your campus. Having a DUI on your record may jeopardize your ability to obtain either of these items, so you will need to verify your eligibility with the DMV or Department of Public Safety. Hiring requirements vary from company to company.  Public utilities tend to be stricter than utility construction companies when it comes to screening applicants. The circumstances surrounding the DUI and the amount of time that has passed since it occurred are factors that most companies consider when making a hiring decision. Students with a DUI on their record should plan to put more effort into the job search than other students.  A DUI on your record may pose a challenge to employment, but it can be overcome with persistence, strong interview skills, and a willingness to be geographically flexible.

STEP 1: APPLICATION

Visit lineman.edu/apply or click on the “Start Your Application” link above to start the simple application process. Completely fill out the online application and pay the application fee (non-refundable). You will be assigned an Admissions Advisor(AA), who will support you throughout the admissions process.

STEP 2: ENROLLMENT

After you complete the application step, you will be emailed a link to the Online Student Portal to continue the enrollment process.  During this step you will upload documents to show that you meet NLC’s minimum admissions requirements, and you will pay a lab fee, which covers the cost of your training materials while you are a student at NLC.  After all the documents are uploaded to our system and the lab fee is paid, your AC will email you an Enrollment Agreement. Once you electronically sign the enrollment agreement, your seat in class is reserved.

NLC’s Applied Mathematics, Smart Grid Electrical Devices Certification and NCCCO Crane Operator Certification optional courses are a great way to advance your education and obtain additional skills and certifications while attending.  You may register for any or all of NLC’s optional courses once you’ve completed the enrollment process.

The lab fee helps cover the cost of materials that are used in your training. Many training materials get worn out quickly and are replaced each term. NLC strives to ensure that only high-quality tools and materials in good working condition are used in your training.

NLC does not guarantee or place you in a job after graduation, but NLC supports your employment efforts in several ways:

• A core component of our curriculum is our unique Career Planning and Strategies (CP&S) course, which prepares you to find and succeed in the Power Delivery industry.
• During CP&S, you will learn about the industry, how to write an effective cover letter and resume, how to interview, and how to present yourself to prospective employers.
• Electrical Lineworker Program students and alumni have exclusive access to NLC’s Alumni Job Portal where Utilities, Municipalities, Electric Cooperatives, Instructor Owned Utilities, and Contractors from across the nation post job openings.
• The Registrar’s Office supports Electrical Lineworker Program students and alumni by providing transcripts, replacement certificates, and support for access to the Alumni Job Portal.

As in any profession, electrical lineworkers who are geographically flexible are much more successful finding employment than those who are not.  For this reason, we encourage you to keep your options open when considering where you will work. It can be challenging to start a career if you limit yourself to a specific town or area.  Instead, we encourage you to consider the entire state, multi-state region, or (even better) the entire country. We have found that graduates who are willing to work anywhere typically receive multiple job opportunities.  And who knows? Maybe that dream job in your home town will open up for you while you’re building your career skills and resume elsewhere.
