What Does An Electrical Lineworker Do?

After graduating and starting your career, you will be answering the call to power our nation, operating, maintaining, and constructing a safe and reliable electrical grid.

Every day will be filled with new challenges and responsibilities, including:

  • Maintaining, operating, and constructing high-voltage lines and equipment
  • Working in elevated positions, using the most up-to-date safety equipment
  • Operating heavy equipment such as cranes, boom trucks, and digger derricks
  • Being a first responder to restore power after natural disasters and incidental outages
  • Building the smart grid and intelligent grid of the future

Northwest Lineman College (NLC) is an educational institution that provides safety and certification training in the power delivery, natural gas, and telecommunications industries.

NLC offers complete solutions from pre-apprentice to advanced training and has remained committed to doing what’s best for the student for more than 25 years.

Since 1993, NLC has grown to over 300 employees with 4 campus locations across the United States.

Learning at Northwest Lineman College

Learn how to safely construct, maintain, and operate the nation’s power grid.

Northwest Lineman College or NLC, promotes a positive learning environment where students are challenged, encouraged, and held accountable. Students are placed in crews where teamwork is emphasized daily.

Training Environment

Using the Three-Phase Educational Model, Northwest Lineman College focuses education around three domains of learning: Knowledge, Skill and Behavior. Each academic course, skill competency, and behavior expectation is shaped by this model.

Students attend class and field training in equal parts each day, Monday through Thursday. Fridays are reserved for preparation and study.

How Do I Get In?

Take a look at our Admissions Requirements below. If you qualify (or if you will qualify by the time a term begins) feel free to apply, or reach out to us for more information.

Admissions Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age by the start date of the term you select.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.NLC requires high-school-level English language proficiency as documented by a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Be eligible to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Be physically and mentally fit to participate (official Medical Release form provided during enrollment process).
  • Provide proof of current medical insurance coverage by the start date of the term you select. (Students are required to keep current coverage for the duration of the program.)
  • Not have a felony conviction on your record.
  • Weigh no more than 270 pounds due to weight restrictions of fall protection equipment.
